River City Company's Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration and a Glimpse into Tradition
Why we celebrate mid-autumn festival
The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival is a significant cultural celebration for people of East and Southeast Asian descent. Some of the countries where it is observed include China, Vietnam, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, South Korea, and Japan. It is a time when families, friends, and communities come together to celebrate the harvest and offer gratitude for the year’s blessings. This festival has deep historical and cultural significance, symbolizing unity, togetherness, and the enduring ties that bind us. As we gaze at the full moon and share mooncakes, we are reminded of the importance of family, shared heritage, and our hopes for a brighter future.

traditional celebrations
Mid-Autumn is a festival that symbolizes unity, family, and the beauty of the harvest season. Here's a glimpse into the traditional celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival:
Lanterns: They are an integral part of the celebration. In the evening hours, colorful lanterns of various shapes and sizes are hung in homes, parks, and streets. Latererns are often shaped like animals, flowers, or characters from folklore, enhancing the whimsical and festive atmosphere.
Offerings to the Moon: Offerings are made to the moon deity. These offerings may include fruits, snacks, and small dishes such as roasted duck or hairy crab.
Folklore & Legends: Storytelling is an essential part of the Mid-Autumn Festival. One of the most beloved tales of the Mid-Autumn Festival centers around Chang'e, the Moon Goddess, and her loyal companion, the Jade Rabbit. Legend has it that Chang'e once lived on Earth but was forced to flee to the moon after consuming an elixir of immortality. On the moon, she is said to reside in a palace, eternally separated from her beloved husband, Houyi the Archer. To keep her company, Chang'e found solace in the company of a kind and industrious Jade Rabbit, who tirelessly pounds the elixir of immortality on her behalf. This heartwarming story of love, sacrifice, and eternal companionship is often recited and celebrated during the Mid-Autumn Festival, reminding us of the enduring power of love and friendship.
Traditional Clothing: During the Mid-Autumn Festival, it's not just the moon that shines; traditional clothing also takes center stage. People often choose to wear cultural attire. In China, for example, you'll frequently spot individuals adorned in elegant Hanfu, a style of clothing with a history dating back thousands of years. Hanfu consists of flowing robes, adorned with intricate embroidery and delicate accessories, reflecting the grace and heritage of Chinese culture. In Vietnam, the Ao Dai, a beautifully tailored two-piece outfit, is a popular choice for women, symbolizing elegance and grace.
